Today has been a pretty productive day. I ran all the errands my parents wanted me to, mowed the grass, went to the gym, and went on a bike ride. Everything was going great until midway through my bike ride two people walking appeared from no where and cut me off which consequently made me jump a curb. Being on a road bike, fear immediately filled my body thinking the worst. After further inspection the worst did indeed happen: I bent my rim.
The bike at the center of this is a classic Peugeot that's older than I am (was my dad's road bike in college, he's now 50.)
I'm so pissed.

Sorry to hear it! Yeah, traffic in all modes is getting weirder and weirder as summer gets old. FWIW, we had good luck straightening steel 27" rims in the bike shops I worked at while getting through college and grad school. Might be worth checking out, or trying it yourself (some blocks of wood and careful hammering).

Yeah, it's these stupid college kids that think they own the entire trail. I come up behind them, let my presence known and they still do not move over. I then squeeze by and they freak out like I'm the one in the wrong. I know not all college kids are like this (I'm a college kid), but some are just complete assholes.

I'm going to try to straighten it myself before I result to the shop or new wheel. I just spent $45 for a tune up and new cable so I'm trying to stay out of there for the time being.

Yeah, it's a steep learning curve here at the start of every fall semester. Trying to ride the Broadway path where it goes by CU is a really bad idea until about October 1.

It's not hard, just requires patience and finding the right size/shape of wood blocks. Good luck!

Thanks! I hope I get good results and I'll be sure to post my results here on Oppo. I still haven't told my dad because I know he's going to be livid as it's still "technically" his bike. Wish me luck! Hahah

Ya, ours is a 27 inch rim as well. Its period correct. But my brother decided he doesnt want to part with it. I suggest you check out Bike Forums .com and find out where your local Bike co-op is. Its a pretty common rim to find, even vintage

You'll probably run into my brother, hes heading up there thursday to start in the mechanical engineering program. He rides often, he's bringing his red 20 year old raleigh rigid frame Mountain bike

Let him know the rumor is the Thursday move-in is being forecast as the busiest/most packed time slot (my wife's on research faculty there, gets all kinds of great notices about this stuff). Extra time, patience, (food? coffee? alcohol?) will likely be required. And good luck to him, on both cycling and the degree! I wouldn't be surprised if I do run in to him at some point, Boulder's got a very smallest-big-town, or biggest-small-town, kind of thing going.
